How We Operate
At MK Urology, we specialize in geriatric urology consulting and bedside urology care within long-term care (LTC) facilities. Our mission is to provide personalized and compassionate care to seniors with chronic and complex urological conditions, minimizing the need for hospital visits. We bring supplies and equipment, including portable ultrasound machines for bladder scanning, directly to our patients' bedsides, ensuring that most diagnoses and treatments are done in-house.
Common conditions we manage include recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), urinary incontinence, retention, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), atrophic vaginitis, pelvic organ prolapse, dysuria, hematuria, genital organ disorders, and catheter management. We offer procedures such as pessary placement and management, estrings, ultrasounds, and cystometrograms. All lab work and extended diagnostics can be performed on-site.
Our process begins when the patient’s primary care provider (PCP) requests a consult. With family permission, we conduct a thorough review of the patient’s chart, including comorbidities, medications, and lab results. We interview caregivers, family members and, when possible, the patient to understand the full clinical picture. A bedside urogenital exam, post-void residual measurements, and physical exams are conducted, along with a cystometrogram to assess bladder function. A comprehensive plan of care is then established and integrated into the patient’s permanent medical record.
We follow up on a quarterly basis, adjusting the care plan as necessary. Treatments may include behavioral interventions, pharmacological approaches, pelvic floor therapy, timed voiding, or pessary management, all tailored to each patient’s needs. Our goal is to enhance dignity and quality of life by minimizing hospitalizations, reducing UTI recurrences, preventing falls, maintaining skin integrity, and managing bowel and bladder patterns.
In addition to patient care, we offer free educational and in-service training to our LTC client facilities as needed.
